Foreword
The merger of the district of Hannover and the greater Hannover area created the Hannover region on November 1, 2001. Many today take it for granted, but the decisions that paved the way for this were pioneering and unique in Germany to date. It is thanks to this courage that today, as the Hannover Region, we are home to 1.2 million people.
November is also a special month for us, as it marks our inaugurations in 2019 and 2021. With the merger of an urban conurbation and a rural environment, the founding ideas of cohesion and cooperation have been both a virtue and a duty since our first day. This forms the basis, which is very important, for joint work in many policy areas, but above all in the areas of transport, social affairs and the economy.
We can be proud of the resulting partnership between the region and the state capital. The success of our joint work can be seen everywhere. Be it in the city or the 20 municipalities in the surrounding area. We therefore meet all the requirements to be a role model for further mergers. One strong indication of this is the funding decisions from the state of Lower Saxony and the European Union for our idea of a region of the future.
This dynamic is also reflected on this platform and on the pages of the print publication. Whether business location or cultural area, whether tradition or future: the region has a lot to offer.
The state capital of Lower Saxony and the Hannover Region together form an important business location with international appeal. Alongside global players from industry, the automotive sector and the finance and insurance sector, Hannover is one of Europe’s major trade fair locations.
And its research and science landscape as well as the innovative start-up scene – for example in the fields of laser research, optics, digitalization and robotics – is almost unique in Europe in its diversity. More than 50,000 students carry the expertise of their university education out into the world.
